It Still Works!

By Ali - Posted on 16 November 2008

At any stage the unit still continues to function if switched on.

This is fascinating!

turn on

Obviously it cannot find the hard drive at boot and gets stuck.

You will also notice that the speaker is connected to the screen base and is now disconnected.

Hi, Thanks for your detailed guide on dismantling the device.. I have now replaced the battery of this unit however when I switch it on .. I get Error Recovery (code 102 )system is damaged. would you like to recover it?.. it shows exactly the screen as posted by you. However I can not select any of the three options... Can you help me ? Thanks.
My device is Archos 605 80Gb Wifi

Hi Santo,
It seems that you have forgotten to connect the cable that comes from the buttons and inserts into the board behind the screen. This is why the right hand buttons are not working. This cable may have disconnected without you knowing. You can simply slip it back into place.

The error 102 could signal a HDD failure. Have you connected the HDD back correctly? Did you accidentally drop or bump the HDD when you removed it. Try disconnecting and re-connecting the HDD and see if it works. Check also if any pins are bent.

Hi Ali,
Many thanks for your help.. the button cable indeed was dangling out of place.. simply put it back and the buttons started responding.
However, I still had to deal with 102 HDD error. Found a solution on archosfans forum.. followed the below steps in the exact order and my device is now up and running again... hurray.

Steps to recover from 102 error:
You follow the exact procedure for re-applying the firmware:

1. First of all, get the latest firmware from archos and save it to your pc. Then connect up your player, when recovery mode comes on select the second option Recover - don't touch anything else as yet.
2. Now connect up the player to your computer with your usb lead and copy over the firmware you have just loaded (the player will show up as an hard drive, just drag and drop into the root of the drive).
3. Now this is the important bit, when the file is copied safely disconnect the player from your computer, once its safe you can now hit "done" on the archos player. The player should then pick up the firmware and install it, this will take between 5-10 mins so you can hook it back up to your pc for juice if needs be.

Note: If this fails this really is the last port of call for your player, it will need a archos techs to take a look.

This procedure has been widely covered on the forum and is mainly used on 4GB players that crash with incompatible cards, but I cant see it being any different on the hard drive players.

Here is the link for the thread of the forum hope it helps others as well.

Excellent work. I want to replace my dead battery and you have unlocked the assembly for me. Thanks again for your sharing.

Thanks a lot for this detailed article. I have an Archos 605 80GB with bad sectors on the drive.. Do you think I can replace it myself? and can I put a different drive than the seagate? maybe a larger one?

Also.. you should check on your camera - there is a little MACRO button (usually looks like a flower).. use it when you take close up photos.. it will look so much better.

Not sure if a new hard drive will work. Most forums and the Archos support website itself say that the drive is tied to the unit by a serial number. So you'll have to take your device back to Archos I'm afraid.

P.S. I have a old digital camera without the macro option. I guess its high time for me to upgrade ;).
