The Mindstorms NXT 8527 and 8547 Kits do not work with the Toshiba Bluetooth stack (v6.10). However in most cases it is possible to use the alternative Microsoft Bluetooth stack to get the job done. Here is how...
Note that if you are running windows XP or Vista, make sure you are logged into an account with full administrator rights before you begin.
Install Microsoft Bluetooth Stack
Note that the Bluetooth monitor is not the same as the Bluetooth stack. The monitor simply enables/disables the Bluetooth card in your laptop so that your operating system can detect it.
Next, if the Toshiba Bluetooth stack is running, disable it. Right click on the Bluetooth icon in the Windows taskbar and select Disable Bluetooth Radio. The icon will turn red. Then right click on the icon again and select Exit. Press yes when asked if you want to exit the Bluetooth manager.
Now you are ready to get rid of the Toshiba Bluetooth stack (this can be reinstalled if you change your mind, the instructions are here). To do this go to Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs (or Programs and Features in Vista) and uninstall the 'Bluetooth stack for windows by Toshiba'. Press yes when asked if you want to delete all settings.
Restart your computer and install the Toshiba Bluetooth monitor application you downloaded earlier. Once the installation is complete windows will detect your Bluetooth hardware and install the Microsoft stack automatically.
Connecting the NXT
Information in this article about connecting the NXT applies to systems using Windows XP. A newer article regarding using kit 8527 on more current windows operating systems is is available here.
Don't rush and try to connect your Mindstorms NXT yet. Instead switch off the NXT and open the Mindstorms software. Then open the device window and delete off any connection you have stored for the NXT you want to connect first.
Now turn on the NXT and switch on Bluetooth on the NXT. Then click the scan button in the Mindstorms software. You will get a passkey window from the NXT software. This is important, the NXT software should ask you for the pass key and not windows.
Leave the passkey to 1234. Press ok on the passkey window and when asked press the orange button on the NXT. The paring should complete and the NXT should now show connected in the Mindstorms connection window.
You may have trouble connecting or re-connecting the NXT once you have connected it. If this happens, go to Control Panel->Bluetooth Devices. You will find your NXT device listed in the Bluetooth Devices window. Select it and press Properties. Go to the Services tab. If the COM port service is listed ensure the box next to it is ticked. Press OK. Windows will install a device driver if the box was previously unchecked.
In the Bluetooth Devices window again select your NXT and remove it. Restart your NXT. Start Mindstorms software and try connecting again.
Reinstall Toshiba Bluetooth Stack
You cannot have more than one Bluetooth stack for the same Bluetooth hardware. So if you want to install the Toshiba Bluetooth stack back, you will lose the Microsoft stack and any connection with the NXT.
To do this download the latest Toshiba Bluetooth stack here.
Go to Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs (or Programs and Features in Vista) and uninstall the 'Bluetooth Monitor' application.
Install the downloaded Toshiba Bluetooth stack.
