This is a award winning German movie directed by Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck and has English subtitles on the DVD. It has quickly become part of one of the best movies I have ever seen.
Before we go ahead here is the trailer:
To be frank the trailer does no justice to the genius of the movie. It looks very pale and dry and so does the title. I think the movie could have much rather been called "Sonata for a good man". The trailer makes the movie feel like a boring film all about German spies monitoring their victims, which is in fact not the central theme of the movie. But apart from the bad trailer and title this movie is a must see.
The movie is a thriller and there are no wild action scenes or flying cars or robots. Most of the movie has a calm pace and may therefore feel dry and slow to action fans. As the movie progresses more of the drama unfolds and towards the end the viewer is left quite bolted to his seat. The idea which I believe it tries to convey is how the goodness in one man brings out the goodness in another, as well as the horrors artists faced during 1984 in East Germany.
The end is quite emotional, though the movie as a whole is not. While the DVD box says strong sex scenes, I did not find this to be true. Moderate would be a better word.
All in all the final verdict is that if you haven't watched this one yet, you ought to.
